Programme profile

This programme is multidisciplinary and provides a solid intellectual grounding with a strong emphasis on methodological approaches.The goal of the program is to give students a comparative understanding of the European and north-American systems, through training in the five disciplines of law, economics, political science, history and sociology. The educational objectives of this programme include developing students" negotiating and decision-making skills through effective oral and written expression, teamwork and the use of information and communication technologies.

The programme also includes several hours a week of language classes, the objective being for all students to be English-French bilingual at the end of the first two years. German, Italian and Spanish are taught as supplementary languages. This programme has a mandatory third year abroad.

Programme content

Years 1 and 2:
The first four semesters offer students a general, interdisciplinary programme, firmly grounded in the social and human sciences, but also open to the languages and humanities through a gradual, rigorously defined framework of electives. At the end of the first year, students undertake a summer practical internship designed to complement the theoretical knowledge acquired. During these two years, the five core disciplines– law, economics, history, political science and sociology: are studied in one or two mandatory modules for each and three electives. Electives include modules in literary and the scientific humanities, and cross-disciplinary areas

Economics includes both microeconomics and macroeconomics. History covers 19th century History of the West in the first year and 20th century in the second. Law concentrates on comparative legal systems and traditions, in continental Europe, north America, and the European Union. Political Science offers an introduction to the essential concepts of political analysis and systems. Sociology presents an introduction to theories and practices of sociological inquiry, including quantitative analysis.

Year 3:
The third year is a mandatory year abroad, either as an internship or a period of study at a partner university, following the same programme as students at the host university. Partner universities include Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, UC Berkeley, University of British Columbia, McGill, University of Toronto, MGIMO (Moscow), Free University Berlin, or Bocconi (Milan).During their third year or the following summer term, students are required to write a senior research thesis either on an academic topic if they are in a partner university, or in the form of an internship report [if they opted to do a long internship in a company].

Dual Degree with University of Sydney
University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Sciences Po now offer students dual degree programmes. From 2014, sttudents have the option to complete half of their studies in Paris and half in Sydney, the two universities have agreed credit recognition between Sydney's Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Political, Economic and Social Sciences (BPESS) programs, with a Sciences Po BA degree
